Generative Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Applications, Challenges and Future Directions

Akshay Nayak B. S., Radhika S. N.

Abstract: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has rapidly influenced higher education by supporting teaching, learning, assessment, research, and institutional services. This review paper analyzes recent studies published between 2020 and 2026 related to large language models, AI tutors, coding assistants, and automated academic systems. The review highlights the benefits of GenAI, including personalized learning, improved productivity, accessibility, and scalable student support. At the same time, concerns regarding academic integrity, hallucination, privacy, bias, and excessive dependency remain significant. The study also identifies research gaps in long-term learning impact, policy frameworks, explainable AI, and discipline-specific adoption. The paper concludes that responsible and policy-driven integration of GenAI can significantly transform higher education.
