Changing Gender Norms in Urban India: A Study of Young Women's Aspirations

Dr. Sanchita Saha

Abstract: Urban India is experiencing rapid socio-cultural transformation, driven by globalization, migration, digital expansion and increasing educational mobility among young women. These developments have redefined gender norms, reshaping how young urban women perceive autonomy, identity, career, relationships and social participation. This research article provides an in-depth analysis of the shifting gender landscape, highlighting the ways in which young women navigate the tensions between tradition and modernity. Using secondary data, academic literature and socio-cultural analysis, the study examines the evolving aspirations of young women and the persistent barriers they confront. The findings underscore that while urbanization has expanded opportunities for women, patriarchal structures, safety concerns, workplace inequalities and social scrutiny continue to challenge their progress. Policy recommendations emphasize the need for inclusive urban planning, gender-responsive institutions and transformative social norms to achieve equitable futures.
