Association between Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Development of Psychopathic Traits: An Analytical Review
Abstract: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse, neglect and household dysfunction, have been associated with a range of later psychological and behavioural outcomes. Psychopathic traits are multidimensional and may involve interpersonal characteristics, reduced empathy and remorse, impulsivity, and antisocial tendencies. This paper analytically reviews existing secondary literature on the association between ACEs and psychopathic traits across developmental, clinical, forensic and criminological perspectives. Particular attention is given to cumulative adversity, different forms of maltreatment, callous-unemotional traits, and developmental factors such as attachment and emotion regulation. The literature reviewed generally indicates a positive association between childhood maltreatment and psychopathic or callous-unemotional traits, although the strength and pattern of this association vary across samples, measures and trait dimensions. Behavioural and antisocial features appear more consistently associated with adversity than some interpersonal and affective features. The evidence does not support treating childhood adversity as a direct or inevitable cause of psychopathy. Rather, ACEs are best understood as one part of a broader developmental context shaped by individual, relational and environmental influences. The review highlights the importance of dimensional assessment, careful interpretation of forensic findings, and further longitudinal research.
