Effectiveness of a Structured Teaching Programme on Asthma among Agricultural Farmers in Selected Rural Areas of K. Gollahalli PHC, Bangalore

Deepa B. V

Abstract: Introduction: Farming occupation exposes workers to dust, pesticides, and other irritants that increase the Risk of Respiratory Problems, particularly Asthma. Asthma contributes significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Farmers often lack awareness of preventive measures, underscoring the need for structured teaching programmes (STPs) to enhance knowledge and improve health outcomes. Methods: A pre-experimental design with a Single group pre-test and post-test was adopted. Using purposive sampling, 60 farmers were interviewed with a structured schedule based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Following the pre-test, an STP on asthma and its prevention was implemented. A posttest was conducted after 8 days using the same tool. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Demographically, most respondents were belonging to the age of 41-50 years (33.3%), male (61.7%), Hindu (98.3%), and literate (78.4%). Agricultural exposure ranged from 1-10 years for nearly half (48.3%). Pre-test mean knowledge score was 24.65 (63.21%), which increased to 32.80 (84.10%) in the post-test. Paired ?t? test confirmed significant improvement at the 5% level. No significant association was found between knowledge gains and demographic variables. Discussion: The findings demonstrate that STPs are effective in enhancing farmers? knowledge about asthma and its prevention. Improved awareness can empower farmers to adopt protective measures, thereby reducing respiratory health risks. Conclusion: Structured teaching programmes significantly improve farmers? knowledge regarding asthma. Nurses play a vital role in delivering such interventions, ultimately contributing to better respiratory health and quality of life among agricultural workers.
