NEP 2020 and Teacher Education in India
Abstract: The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 proposes substantial reforms in teacher preparation, professional development, multidisciplinary teacher education, the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST), Continuing professional development (CPD) and mentoring, technology integration and stronger collaboration between teacher education institutions and schools. Despite these progressive provisions, the implementation of NEP 2020 faces several challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, shortages of qualified teacher educators, barriers to accessing digital resources, gaps between theory and practice, institutional resistance and the diverse learning needs of students. This paper examines the major provisions of NEP 2020 relating to teacher education, challenges and suggests ways and means to strengthen teacher education.
