A Comparison of Suicide Deaths among Men and Women in India: A Secondary Analysis of Data from 2019-2024
Abstract: Background: Suicide is a major public health concern with substantial social, psychological, and economic consequences. Examining differences in suicide deaths between men and women is important for understanding demographic patterns and informing prevention strategies. Objective: To compare the distribution of suicide deaths recorded suicide deaths among men and women in India between 2019 and 2024 and to describe the distribution of suicide deaths across age groups. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective secondary analysis was conducted using annual aggregate data provided in an Excel spreadsheet covering 2019-2024. Annual suicide deaths were summarized by sex, and percentage distributions, absolute changes, and relative changes were calculated. Age-group distributions were examined for the same period. Inferential statistical testing was not performed because the analysis used aggregate annual counts without individual-level observations or population denominators. Results: Total recorded suicide deaths increased from 139,123 in 2019 to 170,746 in 2024, representing a 22.7% increase. Male deaths rose from 97,613 to 125,449, while female deaths increased from 41,493 to 45,245. The male share increased from 70.2% to 73.5%, whereas the female share decreased from 29.8% to 26.5%. In 2024, the 18-29 and 30-44 age groups accounted for 33.1% and 32.2% of all recorded deaths, respectively. Conclusion: Recorded suicide deaths were consistently higher among men than women during 2019-2024. These findings support sex-responsive suicide prevention strategies while highlighting the need for population-based rates and more detailed analyses of contributing factors.
