Data Driven Operational Efficiency in Regional Newspaper Production: A Case Study of Newsprint Circulation and Inventory Optimisation
Abstract: This study proposes analytics practices to help newsprint media organisations optimise their ground-level operations and reduce inventory-related wastage, thereby, saving significant cost which could be reinvested in further business operations. To achieve this objective, the paper analyses three years? worth of data of a local operational branch of a national print media conglomerate in India and generalises the findings across all branches to estimate total potential savings by following the suggested steps. The two major areas of concern are vendor management and inventory demand forecasting, and product redistribution for market capturing. The study utilises analytical tools from pivot charts to choropleths leading to an estimated saving of over INR 10,45,000 per annum for a single production branch or facility. The study identifies some of the most common problems faced by print media production sites and concludes with suggested protocols that every site should follow at the managerial level to overcome such issues by leveraging the power of similar analysis techniques.
