Vedic Science in the Indian Knowledge Tradition: An Analytical Study of Mathematics, Astronomy, Phonetics, and Ayurveda
Abstract: Indian Knowledge Systems are often viewed primarily through religious and philosophical perspectives, although Vedic literature also contains systematic discussions of mathematics, astronomy, phonetics, medicine, and environmental thought. This study identifies scientific concepts in Vedic Samhitas, Vedangas, and Sulbasutras and examines their relationship with corresponding concepts in modern science. A qualitative methodology involving textual analysis, historical interpretation, and comparative examination is employed. The findings highlight geometrical principles and numerical approximations in the Sulbasutras, decimal-based numerical terminology in the Yajurveda, lunisolar calendrical concepts in Vedic astronomical literature, systematic phonetic classification in the Pratishakhyas, and medicinal knowledge in the Atharvaveda. Traditional Vedic recitation methods also demonstrate structured approaches to preserving textual accuracy. The study distinguishes historically documented knowledge from modern scientific interpretations and emphasizes the importance of contextual analysis. It concludes that evidence-based engagement with Vedic scientific traditions can contribute to interdisciplinary education and research, particularly within the framework of India's National Education Policy 2020.
