An Analysis of Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents: Causes and Coping Mechanisms
Abstract: Adolescence is one of the most transformative yet vulnerable stages of life, characterized by rapid biological, cognitive, and social changes. During this period, pressures from academics, identity exploration, peer influence, and digital connectivity can heighten susceptibility to psychological difficulties. Among these, anxiety disorders have emerged as a major mental health concern, affecting millions of adolescents worldwide. Reports by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlight a steady rise in adolescent anxiety, making it a pressing public health issue. The causes of adolescent anxiety are multifaceted, involving genetic predispositions, neurobiological imbalances, and hormonal changes, alongside environmental stressors such as parental conflict, academic burden, bullying, and trauma. Modern socio-cultural influences-particularly social media use, peer comparison, and fear of missing out (FOMO) -further intensify feelings of inadequacy and stress.1 Coping strategies include evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and school-based counseling. Lifestyle practices such as proper sleep, nutrition, exercise, and journaling also help strengthen resilience. In severe cases, pharmacological interventions combined with psychotherapy may be necessary. Early detection and intervention are vital to prevent long-term issues such as depression, substance abuse, or academic decline. Adolescent anxiety is not only a personal struggle but also a societal challenge with consequences for families, education, and productivity. A holistic, preventive approach that integrates family, school, community, and clinical support can reduce stigma, promote resilience, and safeguard adolescent well-being.
