Enterprise Risk Management in the Healthcare Industry
Abstract: The modern healthcare sector stands at a precarious crossroads where technological advancement has become both a blessing and a burden. This article offers a thoughtful exploration of how digital innovation-while streamlining care through tools like AI, IoMT, and telehealth-has simultaneously opened the floodgates to complex cyber, financial, and operational vulnerabilities. It is evident that the sheer value of patient data has turned healthcare into a lucrative target for cybercriminals, with ransomware, phishing, and insider threats posing daily hazards. That said, the challenges extend beyond cybersecurity; compliance with evolving regulations like HIPAA and GDPR, coupled with rising operational costs and staff burnout, creates a volatile mix of risk. What strikes me most is how these issues are deeply intertwined-data breaches don?t just impact privacy, they trigger lawsuits, shake institutional trust, and sometimes delay life-saving treatments. The discussion moves beyond theory, grounding its claims in real-world examples like the WannaCry attack on the NHS, and brings much-needed attention to systemic risk management strategies. This suggests that effective healthcare delivery now depends as much on agile digital governance and proactive regulatory alignment as it does on clinical competence. By weaving together technical, ethical, and financial threads, this study compels healthcare leaders to adopt a unified, forward-thinking risk mitigation framework that defends not just their systems, but their mission.
