Identification of Cadmium Sulphide Particles on the Turin Shroud Using Optical and SEM-EDX Microscopy
Abstract: This study investigates twenty-four microscopic cadmium sulphide particles identified on a facial region sample of the Turin Shroud. Through optical microscopy and SEM-EDX analysis, these particles were characterized alongside their associated compounds, including barium sulphate. Most particles exhibited yellow coloration and appear to have been applied as gold powder substitutes. The findings raise questions about potential restoration or artistic interventions on the Shroud surface, suggesting either post-1840 pigment contact or direct painting with cadmium-based materials.
