The Importance of Human Fluid Intelligence among Healthcare Students and Professionals: A Thematic Literature Study

Abstract: Fluid intelligence (Gf) is the capacity for abstract reasoning, pattern induction, and novel problem solving. It supports adaptive expertise and decision-making in complex clinical environments. This thematic review synthesizes literature on the role of fluid intelligence in healthcare education and practice, structured across five domains: conceptual foundations and contemporary need, significance for academic performance and clinical decision-making, assessment approaches, and evidence-informed methods to support Gf or its executive underpinnings. The review emphasizes fair and context-sensitive assessment and highlights pragmatic strategies for curricula and continuing professional development, including mindfulness and fitness, executive-skills training, and complex, novelty-rich learning designs. While direct enhancement of Gf remains debated, convergent evidence supports strengthening underlying executive functions and shaping learning environments that sustain transfer and resilience.
