Management of a Child with Down Syndrome Using FlashFlicks and StoryScape

Savitha Sathyaprasad, Annie Elizabeth Abraham, Akshata Gangur

Abstract: Children with Down syndrome often experience heightened dental anxiety and communication barriers, which can complicate routine care. This case report describes the successful use of visual behavior management tools, a custom storyboard and flashcards in managing a 6-year-old child with Down syndrome during dental treatment. The child presented with multiple carious lesions, poor oral hygiene and significant behavioral challenges. Given his limited expressive language and previous negative clinical experiences, traditional behavior management techniques were insufficient. A visual-based approach was implemented , which was rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis and visual pedagogy, using step-by-step flashcards and a personalized storybook titled ?A Day at the Dentist.? These tools were introduced at home by the parents before clinical visits and used consistently during appointments. This strategy improved the child?s cooperation, reduced anxiety and enabled the completion of preventive and restorative treatment including ART and stainless steel crowns without pharmacological support. The report underscores how visual aids, when paired with structured routines and caregiver involvement, can transform dental experiences for children with special healthcare needs, promoting both short- and long-term behavioral success.
