Level of Assertiveness among Patients with Alcohol Dependent Syndrome in Control and Experimental Group

Dr. Lalitha

Abstract: Alcohol dependence continues to be a pressing public health concern with multidimensional consequences-physical, emotional, social, and economic. In my view, what makes this condition particularly challenging is not only the biological grip it has on individuals but also the deep-rooted socio-cultural norms that shape both drinking behavior and recovery pathways. This quasi-experimental study dives into a less explored yet pivotal area-how assertiveness training can potentially improve behavioral responses in patients with alcohol dependence syndrome. Conducted among 300 participants at de-addiction centers, the study revealed subtle yet meaningful shifts in assertiveness levels following targeted intervention. The training, rooted in the idea that individuals deserve the right to voice their thoughts respectfully, offered patients a structured, psychologically empowering tool to break patterns of passive or aggressive communication. Interestingly, the demographic insights-ranging from income brackets to family structures-shed light on how personal contexts influence assertiveness and receptiveness to therapy. It is evident that integrating assertiveness training into rehabilitation models may offer a more personalized and culturally sensitive approach to behavioral reform. This raises another point: for therapy to truly resonate, it must align with the individual's social backdrop and psychological readiness. The study not only underscores the therapeutic promise of assertiveness training but also invites deeper reflection on how simple behavioral strategies can pave the way toward more sustainable recovery outcomes.
