The Impact of Involvement of SHG on Self-Esteem among Rural Women of Bangalore

Abstract: This study explores the impact of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) on the self-esteem of rural women in the Bangalore district of Karnataka. SHGs have emerged as a powerful instrument for women empowerment and rural development through financial inclusion, social solidarity, and independence. The study incorporated surveys using questionnaires with 150 women members of the SHGs in rural areas such as Anekal, Hoskote, and Devanahalli. The study reveals high positive correlations among SHG participation and greater self-esteem. Economic independence, peer support, domestic decision-making, and community visibility are the primary reasons for change. Increased confidence, communication, and sense of identity were evidenced among most women. Despite a few disadvantages such as lack of mobility and patriarchal resistance, SHGs have influenced members' psychosocial well-being substantially. The study comes to a conclusion that SHGs are not just economic empowerment strategies but also critical spheres of psychological growth and self-esteem for rural women. The results stress the need for strengthening and scaling up SHG programs for overall rural development.
