Exploring the Role of Information and Communication Technologies in Promoting Environmental Awareness through Education

Abstract: Environmental challenges like climate change demand increased public awareness and educational engagement. This study synthesizes findings from a recent undergraduate thesis at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, focusing on how Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) support environmental education and sustainable development. Using a qualitative and descriptive approach, the paper examines digital platforms and ICT-based teaching strategies that enhance public accessibility to environmental knowledge. The study finds that digital tools, when meaningfully integrated with pedagogical objectives, promote engagement, facilitate broader participation, and contribute to improved environmental awareness. However, challenges such as digital literacy and infrastructure must be addressed for ICT to be fully effective in environmental education contexts.
