A Study on the Impact of Microfinance on Women's Micro-Entrepreneurship Performance in Ernakulam District

Sreelakshmi Mohanachandran

Abstract: Microfinance has emerged as a powerful tool for promoting women?s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment in developing regions. In Kerala, especially in Ernakulam district, many women have accessed microfinance through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Kudumbashree units, and Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to start or expand small businesses. This study aims to examine the association between the level of microfinance support and women?s micro-entrepreneurship performance in Ernakulam district. Using a Chi-square test of independence, the research will determine whether microfinance exposure (low, medium, or high) is significantly related to performance outcomes such as income growth, business expansion, and employment generation. A structured questionnaire will be used to collect data from 90 women entrepreneurs across selected areas of Ernakulam. The findings will help evaluate how effectively microfinance contributes to women?s entrepreneurial success and guide policymakers in strengthening financial inclusion programs.
