Moebius Syndrome - Case Report

Jasmine P Kalyani

Abstract: This article delves into the complexities of developmental disorders of the facial nerve, specifically focusing on Moebius syndrome and the absence of facial musculature. It provides a detailed overview of the anatomical and functional aspects of the facial nerve, highlighting the four cell groups within the motor nuclei and their roles in facial expression and movement. The paper presents a case study of a patient with a unique presentation of these disorders, including the absence of the facial nerve on one side and explores the neuroimaging findings and the rarity of such cases. Additionally, it discusses the co-occurrence of autism in children with Moebius syndrome and emphasizes that, despite the lack of a cure, individuals with Moebius syndrome can lead average lives with proper care. The article also reviews various surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients with permanent facial paralysis, aiming to improve facial function and appearance. Through this comprehensive examination, the article sheds light on the challenges and possibilities in managing developmental disorders of the facial nerve, offering insights into both the clinical and surgical interventions available.
