Incentive Spirometry in Postoperative Pulmonary Complications
Abstract: Objective: The aim of this narrative review is to search the available literature to findeffectiveness of incentive spirometry in pulmonary complication after surgery. Methodology: Literature was searched with the use of many electronic databases (Google Scholar, CINAHL, Pubmed central and Oxford Press, Science direct, National Library of Medicine (Pubmed), Biomed Central). Additionally, more reference articles were searched to increase the search of accuracy. Conclusion: Despite its widespread use, it has remained challenging to demonstrate a clinical benefit in terms of either incidence of post operative pulmonary complications or hospital stay. Until evidence of benefit from well - designed clinicals trials becomes available, the routine use of IS in postoperative care is not supported by available literature.
