Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder: Systematic Review

Anila Kazaferi - Dyrma, Valbona Alikaj

Abstract: Bipolar disorder is characterized by mood episodes that are nearly always recurrent. Patients who experience at least four episodes during a 12 - month period are classified in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM - 5 - TR) as "rapid cycling". The term was first used in 1974 to describe bipolar patients who were unresponsive to lithium. However, it is now clear that any form of pharmacotherapy (including lithium) is typically less effective for rapid cycling patients than for non - rapid cycling patients. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and diagnosis of rapid cycling in patients with bipolar disorder.

Keywords: rapid cycling bipolar disorder, epidemiology, clinical correlates
