Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on Knowledge Regarding Infection Control Measures among Housekeeping Staff

Abstract: Background: Every year, lives are lost because of the spread of infection in hospitals. Healthcare workers can take steps to prevent the spread of infectious disease. These steps are the part of infection control. Infection control is the discipline which is concerned with preventing health care associated infection. It is vital and essential for safety and well-being of the patients, hospital staff and visitors of the hospital. Objective: To assess the existing level of knowledge regarding infections control measures among housekeeping staff. To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding infection control measures among housekeeping staff. To find out the association between the Pre-test knowledge scores and their selected socio-demographic variables. Methodology: A Quantitative research approach and Quasi experimental (one group pre-test post-test research design) was used. Non probability convenience sampling technique was used to select the samples of housekeeping staff working in Vivekananda Polyclinic and Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Data was analysed by using descriptive & inferential statistics. Results: In pre-test majority 95.7% samples had inadequate knowledge, 4.3% had moderate and none of them had adequate knowledge. In post-test majority 95.7% had adequate and 4.3% were moderate and none of them had inadequate knowledge. Pre intervention mean knowledge score of study population was 11.41?2.56. Post intervention score was found 26.66?1.71. A change of 15.25 mean knowledge score was observed which was found statistically highly significant. The calculated "t" value was 42.31 at 0.05 level. Conclusion: The study concluded that structured teaching programme was effective in enhancing the knowledge regarding infection control measures among housekeeping staff working in Vivekananda Polyclinic and Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Hence H1 was accepted.
