The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Redefining Diagnostics and Prognostics
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) transforms healthcare delivery, particularly through reinterpretations of clinical diagnostics and prognostics. Diagnostic imaging is AI's most established healthcare application, especially utilizing supervised learning, while natural language processing enhances clinical documentation and coding. Signal processing, another current focus area, incorporates diverse datasets, sometimes multimodally. Prognostic modeling determines and stratifies risks through patient history and real-time biometric sampling. AI guides temporally, identifies candidates for complex therapeutic regimes, and prevents degeneration. Current medical practice views AI systems not as substitutes for, but as support tools for, healthcare professionals. Integration into clinical workflows is crucial and can ease burdensome documentation. Acceptance hinges on system explainability, which builds trust and reduces diagnostic error. Patients, too, favour explainable decision support. Issues of data ownership and misuse loom large; regulatory frameworks addressing privacy, transparency, and security are being developed. Case studies demonstrate AI's diagnostic prowess and predictive capacity, especially neurodegenerative degeneration. Future developments in longitudinal patient monitoring and preventive therapy remain in their infancy.
