Representation of Marginalized Communities in Mahesh Dattani English Drama

Abstract: Mahesh Dattani is one of the most significant contemporary Indian playwrights who uses drama as a medium to address the concerns of marginalized communities in Indian society. His plays challenge dominant social norms and bring attention to the experiences of individuals who are often excluded, silenced, or discriminated against because of their gender, sexuality, religion, or social status. Through realistic characterization and powerful dramatic techniques, Dattani exposes the inequalities embedded in family structures and social institutions. This paper examines the representation of marginalized communities in Dattani's major plays, including Tara, Final Solutions, and On a Muggy Night in Mumbai. The study explores themes such as gender discrimination, patriarchal oppression, communal prejudice, and the struggles of LGBTQ+ individuals for identity and acceptance. Dattani's characters reflect the emotional and psychological consequences of social exclusion while simultaneously challenging oppressive structures. The paper argues that Dattani's dramas function as a platform for voicing the concerns of the marginalized and fostering social awareness among audiences. By presenting complex human experiences and questioning established norms, Dattani encourages dialogue on equality, justice, and inclusivity. His contribution to Indian English drama lies in his ability to transform the stage into a space where marginalized voices are heard and recognized. Thus, his plays remain relevant in contemporary discussions on social justice and human rights. Marginalization refers to the process through which certain individuals or groups are pushed to the edges of society and denied equal access to opportunities, rights, and recognition. In India, marginalized communities often include: 1) Women facing patriarchal discrimination. 2) LGBTQ+ individuals facing social stigma. 3) Religious minorities experiencing prejudice. 4) People with disabilities. 5) Those excluded because of class, caste, or social norms. Dattani's plays explore these forms of exclusion and reveal their emotional, psychological, and social consequences.
