A Study on the Impact of Regular Exercise on Anxiety and Depression among Young Adults

Sajith V M

Abstract: Mental health problems such as anxiety and depression are becoming increasingly common among young adults due to rapid lifestyle changes, academic pressure, career uncertainty, and social challenges. Young adulthood is a critical developmental period characterized by emotional, psychological, and social transitions. During this phase, individuals are more vulnerable to psychological distress, which can negatively affect their overall well-being and quality of life. Regular physical exercise has been widely recognized as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for improving mental health. Exercise contributes to psychological well-being by reducing stress hormones, enhancing mood-regulating neurotransmitters, and improving self-esteem and cognitive functioning. Despite the growing awareness of mental health issues, many young adults lead sedentary lifestyles, which may increase the risk of anxiety and depression. The present study aims to examine the impact of regular exercise on anxiety and depression among young adults. A sample of 120 young adults aged between 18 and 30 years was selected using purposive sampling technique. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used to assess anxiety and depression levels among the participants. Statistical analyses such as mean, standard deviation, and t-test were employed to analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that young adults who engage in regular exercise exhibit significantly lower levels of anxiety and depression compared to those who do not exercise regularly. The results highlight the importance of incorporating physical activity into daily routines as a preventive and therapeutic strategy for promoting mental health. The study emphasizes the role of exercise as a cost-effective, accessible, and sustainable approach to reducing psychological distress among young adults.
