Sensorineural Hearing Loss in CKD Patients
Abstract: The functions of kidneys in the human body mainly involve metabolism, excretion of waste materials, blood pressure regulation, and blood cell production. Any insult to the structural and functional integrity of the kidneys over some time can lead to acute/chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD occurs when an abnormal nephrology system leads to a reduction in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) to a value <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, for ≥3 months. Study design: Non-randomised, Case control study. Study site: Gouri Devi Hospital and Research Institute. Results: Majority of the patients (36.7%) in Controls Group were in the age group of 21-30 years followed by 23.3% patients from the age group of 31-40 years and 20% patients each from the age group of 41-50 and 51-60 years. The mean age of the patients was 36.8 ± 12.03. Majority of the patients (33.3%) in Cases Group were in the age group of 51-60 years followed by 30% patients from the age group of 41-50 years, 20% patients from the age group of 31-40 years and 16.7% patients from the age group of 21-30 years. The mean age of the patients was 43.3 ± 11.58 years. The degree of hearing loss in left ear was higher in Cases Group as compared to Controls Group. 5 (16.7%) patients each had hearing loss for ≤7 days and ≥1 year while 10 (33.3%) patients each had hearing loss for 8-29 days and 1-11 months. It was observed that there is higher incidence of SNHL in patients with low eGFR There was significant association of eGFR with degree of SNHL
