Process Action Therapy (PAT): An Introduction and Review of a Pre-Planned Action Approach to Mental Health Care

Lakawthra M. Cox

Abstract: Process Action Therapy (PAT) is a pragmatic, behavior-oriented therapeutic approach designed to help clients manage challenges when immediate cognitive processing is difficult. This paper introduces the conceptual foundations and practical processes of PAT and examines client-reported experiences associated with its implementation. The approach incorporates pre-planned behavioral actions, positive self-talk, present-focused strategies, and practical coping techniques. Client feedback was collected through optional third-party satisfaction surveys and written reviews. The reported overall service rating was 4.9 out of 5, with 1,038 responses identified in the service-rating data. This introduction reviews the available feedback of Process Action Therapy used with thousands of clients in over 25 countries from diverse backgrounds. Additional qualitative analysis of client feedback highlighted perceived emotional safety, therapeutic alliance, practical skill development, coping, and empowerment. Reviews submitted at different treatment stages suggested a progression from initial therapeutic engagement toward perceived skill acquisition and personal growth. These findings provide preliminary descriptive support for the acceptability and perceived usefulness of PAT. However, the absence of a comparison group, standardized clinical outcome measures, and independent assessment limits conclusions about treatment effectiveness. Further controlled research is recommended to evaluate its clinical applications and outcomes.
