Aahar: The Ayurvedic Concept of Diet as the Foundation of Health
Abstract: In Ayurveda, Aahar (diet) is considered the foundation of life and health. It is one of the Trayopasthambha- the three main pillars of life- alongside Nidra (sleep) and Brahmacharya (celibacy). The classical texts describe Aahar not only as a means of sustenance but as medicine (Aushadhi) that supports physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The present article explores the Ayurvedic understanding of Aahar in relation to the Panchamahabhuta, Doshas, Dhatus, Malas, and modern nutritional science. It also discusses the concept of Pathya (wholesome) and Apathya (unwholesome) food, Aahar Vidhi Vishesh Ayatana (eight factors of food intake), and its relevance to lifestyle disorders in contemporary life. The paper highlights the harmony between traditional Ayurvedic dietetics and modern nutritional principles and proposes a balanced approach for disease prevention and health promotion.
