Small Incision Cataract Surgery Modified Techniques for New Era

Dr. K. Siva Subbarao [2]

Abstract: This paper aims to demystify Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS), highlighting its high-quality outcomes comparable to phacoemulsification, its cost-effectiveness, and rapid patient recovery with minimal morbidity. Despite the challenge of postoperative astigmatism, the study emphasizes SICS's versatility across a wide range of cases. The research methodology involved analyzing postoperative data from 112 cases, with a focus on visual acuity, astigmatism, and postoperative complications, comparing SICS with phacoemulsification. Various surgical aspects such as incision size, corneal valve integrity, and techniques like hydrodissection and hydrodelination were examined. The study also explores modifications in surgical procedures, including anesthesia methods, conjunctival handling, and tunnel construction, to enhance outcomes and reduce complications like conjunctival edema and astigmatism. The conclusion underscores the potential for SICS to evolve and its applicability in settings where advanced techniques like phacoemulsification and laser are less accessible, advocating for continued improvement and adoption of this technique in India.
