The Rational Use of Antibiotics

Abstract: Introduction: The abuse of antibiotics as well as the development of microbial resistance in them is a global phenomenon. Aim: The purpose of this study is to highlight the rational use of antibiotics and limitation of microbial resistance. Materials and methods: Extensive review of the recent literature was conducted in database Medline and via the link of the (HEAL-Link) Greek Association of Academic Libraries, using key words: antibiotics, medicine and rational use of antibiotics. Results: The rational use of antibiotics that should be random. It should be thought and should be based on guidelines. The accurate diagnosis, the patients condition, the site of infection, the severity of microbial cause and its sensitivity to antibiotics, the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antimicrobials, their side effects and costs are the main elements which must be supported in every aspect for the use. Conclusion: Physician and other health care professionals should prescribe antibiotics only when necessary and based on condition severity, according to the existing guidelines.
