Applicability of the Bulk Water Transportation Method to Harvest Unused Run-Off of River System in Sri Lanka

Dr. A. G. Amarasingha | B. K. K. Gayathra Perera

Abstract: Determining the applicability of the bulk water transportation method to harvest unused run-off of river system in Sri Lanka is significant as Sri Lanka experience a 130 billion cubic meters of water every year but discharge 50 billion cubic meters every year to the sea. However, Sri Lanka remains a tropical island where of its land is climatically define as the dry zone. This clearly indicates that there is an unequal distribution of water within the country and on the other hand, there is a large amount of underutilized water resource being discharges to the sea as well. The main objective of the study is to determine whether the underutilized water resource mentioned above can be utilize by using bulk water transportation. Secondary data were used to examine the feasibility of main objective. Data of Rain water density, discharging quantities of water from 103 natural river basins; published by, respectively department of meteorology, department irrigation were used in descriptive methodology to find out the conceptual feasibility in an inductive way. Based on interpreted data this study proves that the underutilized water resource in Sri Lanka can be utilize by using a bulk water transportation method.
