Communication Strategies in Tracheostomized Patients
Dr Attili Krishna Aravind | Dr Chandrasekhar Krishnamurti [9]
Abstract: Tracheostomy is a common surgical procedure performed on critically ill patients. Approximately 10 % of cancer patients receive a tracheostomy after major head and neck surgeries to facilitate prolonged airway and ventilatory support. The tracheostomy interferes with air coming into contact with the larynx and decreases the ability of the patient to communicate effectively. The ability to speak provides an important improvement in the quality of life for a patient with a tracheostomy and the inability to communicate can cause frustration and fester anxiety, fear and panic and a feeling of isolation in many patients. Communication facilitates recovery, whereas poor communication can result in psychological problems and hinder recovery. The inability to communicate can also compromise the appropriate medical treatment because patients are unable to effectively describe their condition or problems. Providing the tracheostomized patient with the most effective and efficient means of communication is critical to the rehabilitation and well being of the patient
