Study of Haematological Profile in Patients with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome

Abstract: INTRODUCTION Alcohol is an organic compound in which the hydroxyl functional group is bound to carbon atom1. The American Medical Association considers the alcoholism as a disease. The effect of chronic alcohol abuse can cause both medical and psychiatric problems2. Alcoholism has been marked one of the most deadly chronic diseases and thus rated the third leading cause of mortality 3. Brain atrophy is the most common CNS complication of heavy alcoholics and it may lead to dementia, even in young drinkers4. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY ■ To study the Haematological changes in Alcohol Dependence Patients. ■ To evaluate the hematological parameters of alcoholic dependents. General evidence based data that could be used to develop a policy on the control of alcoholic consumption in the area and the management of hematological complications related to alcoholic dependents. SUMMARY: ● 100 ADS patients were included in the study and the haematological profile was studied ● All 100 ADS patients were investigated for hb, total leucocyte count, platelet count. ● Among 100 ADS patients, 44 patients (44 %) had anaemia. They were further classified as mild, moderate and severe anaemia. Majority of the patients (61 %) had mild anaemia. ● All 44 anaemic patients were evaluated with peripheral smear, serum iron and ferritin. A low serum iron was seen in majority (73 %) of these patients with a mean value of 51.32 microgm/dl. High serum ferritin was seen in major
