Clinical Profile of Chronic Otitis Media: Our Experience

Abstract: Introduction: Chronic otitis media (COM) is an inflammatory process in the middle-ear that results in long-term changes including atelectasis, perforation, tympanosclerosis, retraction pockets, or cholesteatoma.1 Malnutrition, overcrowding, poor hygiene, frequent respiratory tract infections are risk factors.2, 3 COM is a common disease in ENT practice, proper evaluation and treatment can prevent morbidity due to its complications.4 Objective: To study the characteristic clinical profile in chronic otitis media. Methodology: A prospective descriptive analysis of 1000 patients diagnosed with COM who underwent surgery for the same between June 2018 to June 2019 was done. Results: Most of the patients, 42 % were in 20-30 year age range. There were 548 male patients ( 54.8 %) and 452 female patients (45.2 %).736 (73.6 %) patients had safe type of COM, and 264 (26.4 %) patients unsafe type.56 (5.6 %) presented with complications, most common was mastoid abscess (24).60.6 % cases underwent cortical mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty, 23.6 % cases underwent canal wall down mastoidectomy. Conclusion: Most of our patients were male, in the age range of 20-30 years. Most of the cases were of safe type and cortical mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty was the most common procedure performed. Temporalis fascia was the most common graft material. Mastoid abscess was the most common complication.
