Literacy and Their Differential in West Bengal

Abstract: Education is a human right. Education is essential for human emancipation and social development. It contributes to better health; higher productivity; greater income; human freedom; capability and esteemed living; increased participation in community life. Education is the single best development investment and a powerful instrument to develop an economically prosperous society. The long term social and economic return from education is enormous. The level of development of any region or any area may be gauged through the socio-economic characteristics of people. Of the various elements of population characteristics; the level of literacy and education gives the best exposition of regional development because of its dual functions as cause and effect of modernization. The case of West Bengal has been taken to known the spatial pattern of literacy and their differential and why they occur by the set of explanatory variables. The level of literacy differential in the state has been evaluated by creating differential index. On the basis of the analysis create a blue print for planning for reduce or vanishing the differential on literacy and education in West Bengal.
