Perspectives on Socio-economic and Psychological Effects of Bitumen Exploration on Host Communities: A Case Study of Agbabu, Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract: This study is an assessment of potential socio-economic and psychological effects of bitumen exploration on residents of Agbabu community in Ondo State, South-West, Nigeria. It provides vital demographic information and perceptions of residents on the effects of bitumen exploration on their physical environment, health and social life. A multistage random sampling technique was used in the study for a total population of 170 respondents. Pre-tested study, well-structured interview schedule and focus group discussion were used to collect data which were susequently analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. Finally, recommendations are made to Government and other stakeholders on policies and programs to establish and maintain symbiosis among all parties involved.
