Effectiveness of Foam Roller based Myofascial Release in Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome among Athletic Runners

Background: Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is more common among athletic runners. Foam rolling (FR) is a form of self-massage in which the targeted musculature is rolled and compressed utilizing a FR device. Objective: To find out the effectiveness of Foam roller Based Myofascial release in Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome among athletic runners. Methods: Pilot study was conducted on 20 athletic runners were included under selection criteria aged between 25-40 with Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome and treated with Foam rolling and other ex's like seated shin stretch, calf stretch, Gastrocnemius stretch and calf raises for totally 5 weeks. The outcome tools used are NPRS (Numerical Pain Rating Scale) and MTSS (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome Score). Results: Unpaired t test is used for group analysis. The result of the study shows that Foam roller has significant improvement in reducing Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome in athletic runners (p<0.0001). Conclusion: This study concluded that the foam roller is more effective in reducing Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome among athletic runners.
