Neonatal Screening for G6PD, 17-OHP and TSH Levels

Objective The basic screening of newborn babies for detecting pathologies like G6PD deficiency leading to hyperbilirubinemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and congenital hypothyroidism. Method A Screening Program was conducted at a tertiary care hospital for 2 months i. e. April 2014 to May 2014. All the neonates born in this hospital were screened on third to fifth day of their birth for levels of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD), 17- Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). Results Out of a total of 57 neonates screened in 2 months, 2 cases (4.26 %, 1 male and 1 female) were observed as G6PD deficient and no cases were observed for increased level 17-OHP and increased level of TSH. Conclusion Neonatal screening is very important in reducing neonatal mortality and morbidity. Screening programs help us to identify those cases that cannot be identified by routine observation and physical examination. A cost effective nation wide screening program is highly recommended for detection of cases as early as possible.
