Steroid Induced Psychosis in a 20-Year-Old Girl with Erythema Nodosum Leprosum
Leprosy or Hansen's disease is a chronic contagious disease caused by aetiological bacteria Mycobacterium leprae affecting skin and peripheral nerves . Leprosy reaction is of three types: 1. type 1 reaction (reversal reaction/RR) 2. type 2 reaction (erythema nodosum leprosum/ENL), and 3. Lucio's phenomenon . It is managed by anti leprosy medications with corticosteroids, or clofazimine in combination with corticosteroids or clofazimine alone . Steroids are one of the principal drugs used in the treatment of leprotic reactions by inhibiting early and late inflammation . Steroid induced psychiatric adverse affects include mania, psychosis, delirium and mixed mood effects. Here we are presenting a case report who was on corticosteroid (prednisolone 40mg was given as the treatment) developed psychosis.
