Globally, it is estimates that million couples experience fertility problems. For couples and clinicians, a diagnosis of infertility signals the start of investigations and possible treatment. Agreement about the criteria used to make this diagnosis is also crucial to evaluating the effectiveness of alternative interventions for the condition. However, accurate knowledge about the prevalence of infertility, awareness of secular trends and geographical differences are essential for providers of reproductive health care as well as policy-makers. Critical to establishing prevalence is a clear, unambiguous definition of the condition and an efficient instrument for making a diagnosis.
