State Creation as a Tool for Resolving Ethnic Conflicts in Nigeria: A Myth or Reality?

Agbegbedia Oghenevwoke Anthony, Ejegbavwo Fidelis

Ethnic conflicts between the majorities and minorities as well as the imbalance of the Nigerian federation have led to agitation for the creation of new states in recent times. This is due to the fact that, creating new states could act as a catalyst for resolving ethnic conflicts. This work therefore, analysed issues of state creation and evaluated the mythology and reality of state creation in resolving ethnic conflicts in Nigeria. Secondary sources were used in data collection. Findings review that state creation has never resolved ethnic conflicts instead, it led to fractionalisation of ethnic groups. The government should as a matter of fact, promote true democracy for the sustenance of unity among the various ethnic groups in the country.
