Quality Assurance and Performance Gap Assessment of Agriculture Teachers in Teaching Yam Production in Colleges of Education in Nigeria

This study determines quality assurance and performance gaps of agriculture teachers in teaching yam production in Colleges of Education in Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study. Twenty-eight teachers and 46 final year students of Agriculture from two Colleges of Education were used for the study. Psycho-productive Multiple Choice Test (PMCT), Competency Cluster Structured Questionnaire Items (CCSQI) and Focus Students Group Discussion were used for data collection. Frequency counts, percentages, mean and Improvement Need Index (INI) was employed to answer research questions. It was found that: Quality was assured in the teaching Planting; Post-planting and Harvesting Operations but Quality was not assured in teaching Planning; Pre-planting and Marketing Operations. It was also found that teachers had High Competencies in teaching Planting; Post-planting and Harvesting Operations; Low Competency in Pre-planting Operations and Very Low Competencies in teaching Planning and Harvesting Operations. Performance Gaps were observed and improvements were needed.
