Evaluation of Quality of Life of Well Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma Patients at Baseline and Six Months after Low Dose versus High Dose Radioactive Iodine-131 Ablation
Dina Ragab Diab Ibrahim, Tahany Mohamed Rabie
Background- Radioactive iodine RAI- 131 ablation of differentiated thyroid carcinoma DTC following total thyroidectomy can compromise the quality of life (QOL) of patients. We aimed to compare the effect of 30 versus 80 mCi RAI- 131 ablative doses on the quality of life of DTC patients. Methods- the validated Arabic version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30 version 3.0) was used to assess the QOL of low risk DTC patients randomized to 80 or 30 mCi RAI post-thyroidectomy both pre-ablation, and 6 months post-ablation. Results- Fifty-six DTC patients were randomized to 30mCi (30/56) and 80 mCi (26/56) RAI-13. At 6 months the global health status, functioning (p >0.000), and symptoms scores (p0.05), whereas the 30 mCi dose caused higher symptoms scores (p
