Identification and Assessment of Bauxite Mining Activity in Western Maharashtra, India

Abstract: This study aims to identify and assess the extent of bauxite mining activity in Western Maharashtra, India. By analyzing satellite images, field observations, and official mining data, the study estimates the area of land excavated for bauxite mining. The results reveal a significant presence of bauxite mines in Kolhapur, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts. The total land area excavated for mining in Western Maharashtra is 7, 697, 076.5 Sq. Mtrs., with the Konkan region accounting for 2, 208, 702 Sq. Mtrs. and Sahyadri region accounting for 5, 488, 375 Sq. Mtrs. These findings highlight the importance of sustainable development strategies for mining affected areas.
